From beginning to end this song speaks on complete surrender. Surrendering all your past mistakes, as well as surrendering control of your life to Jesus. We wanted the song in the verses to progress as the song goes on. From verse one at an almost broken state of mind, too ashamed to believe Christ can love someone like me. Moving to verse two with living each day for myself over and over again, coming to the point of being fed up with it. Finally reaching verse three where we submit to God and lay everything down at his feet with lyrics like „Sever the old ties, open my blind eyes, chisel this heart that’s made of stone“. „Wake up the sleeper, change my demeanor, breather new life into these dry bones“.
We wanted lyrics in the verses that connects with the listener on real life struggles. Not just struggling with sin but living for ourselves and trying to accomplish that without Jesus. We wanted to show that everyone battles with life in their own way, and it doesn’t get fixed overnight.

The chorus is our favorite part of the song. It really brings the prayerful cry from our hearts out into the open. The chorus was a no brainer for us. After the progression of all the verses, we needed a chorus that was literally an overcoming, surrendering cry to God. A commitment of surrender that we are ready to release the grip on our own lives and hand it over to Him. These lyric lines, „Open these cold clenched fists. Bring me to the end of myself“, is our cry to God saying „I’m done. I can’t do this on my own, this heart is yours“. It’s such a powerful, positive, challenging chorus. In the same, it’s something we all struggle doing on a daily basis.

Our hope is this song opens the eyes of believers and non-believers. To not rely on themselves to get through life, but to surrender everything to Christ. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23​), but we don’t have to stay down. We all have the opportunity to rise back up, but first we need to surrender our lives to Him.
